“Philanthropy is crucial in today's healthcare world to maintain top quality patient care, offer state-of-the-art technology, and to attract the very best medical talent.”

Nancy and Bill Thompson of Irvine, Calif., know first-hand the worry that strikes a family when a child falls ill. In severe pain and losing weight rapidly, their 8-year-old grandson living on the Peninsula was admitted to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, where he stayed in intensive care for over a week.

Although the experience was nerve-racking, Nancy and Bill took strength from seeing a team of highly specialized and experienced physicians working together to stabilize their grandson. This multi-disciplinary collaboration was crucial to the eventual diagnosis of a rare and highly contagious combination of bacterial and viral infections.

Their grandson is now happy and fully recovered, thanks to the excellent treatment he received at Packard Children's. As an expression of gratitude, Nancy and Bill decided to join the Chairman's Circle, a special group of generous donors who support the Children's Fund with an annual gift of $25,000 or more. The couple takes pride in helping to ensure that the same level of care remains accessible for all local families, even those with limited means.

Nancy and Bill will always be grateful to Packard Children’s for helping their grandson when he needed it most. "Philanthropy is crucial in today's healthcare world to maintain top quality patient care, offer state-of-the-art technology, and to attract the very best medical talent," notes Bill, a leader in the business world. "We hope our gift will help make a difference."
